Character Development for Animation with Dian Perry

  • Have you always dreamed of working in cartoons?
  • Do you already have some experience in animation or video games, but would like some solid tools to create more character voices?
  • Do you want to work on your character improvisation skills so you’re ready for anything in an audition?
  • Do you feel ready to put together an animation reel, but don’t know where to begin?

We are very lucky to have the incredibly talented voice actor and teacher, Dian Perry, back again for another Character Development for Animation 2 day workshop. It’s been designed specifically for you (The VoiceOver Network members) and wow, is it an incredibly fun weekend! Every past participant has come away inspired, invigorated, confident, armed with new knowledge and insight into working in this exciting sector of our industry!

'Dian Perry's Animation and Character Development workshop was the first
VON workshop I'd ever attended - and boy did I pick a goodun! I got my
first real glimpse into what I would really need to be successful in
animation voice acting. I'd always loved doing "silly voices" but Dian
gave me tools I could work with to develop, be flexible, explore
techniques and be creative. She broke it down into such an easy to
digest but eye opening way. She was motivating and would work her ways
with you so by the end of it you were doing characters you didn't think
you could do! We got a chance to record our own characters plus work
together with scripts. And we were given the chance to work with some
animation ADR which was incredibly fun and ignited an interest I didn't
know I had! But overall, I took away an invalauble bag of tools, some
great professional advice and I made a few friends at the same time!
Invest in yourself and don't miss this opportunity!' - Ally Murphy, voiceover
artist and member of The VoiceOver Network.

Both days will be held at Casual Films in North London. On Day One, this wonderful venue provides a spacious area to learn, play and create. On Day Two, you’ll be in the professional studio with an engineer to do scene work, record and practice ADR to an animated scene.

Here are just a few of the topics which will be covered on this unmissable weekend:

  • Pat Fraley’s 6 elements of a character voice
  • Archetypes and why they are so important in character work
  • Creating an original character voice from an image
  • Physicality and why it’s vital to character work
  • Where to get ideas for new character voices
  • ADR (dubbing) to a pre-animated scene
  • Tips on creating a killer animation reel
  • Industry Q&A

Vocal Intensive Workshop with Yvonne Morley

As voiceover artists our most important tool is of course our voice, without it we are in trouble. As voiceover professionals we need to make sure that we train it and look after it. The voice is a muscle and can be trained but if used incorrectly it can be damaged. As voiceover artists we are vocal athletes and all athletes need to train.

The fantastic world renowned vocal coach Yvonne Morley has put together this brilliant 1 day workshop for The Voiceover Network. This is a workshop designed for voiceover artists of all levels.

This has been an incredibly popular workshop. This is the 5th Vocal Intensive workshop Yvonne has run for us.

"So many fellow VON members said Yvonne's Intensive workshop was amazing so I was intrigued and signed up.  I'm so happy I did. The tools and knowledge she shares is invaluable. There are so many "take-aways" too many to mention but I've put in to practice the "SPLAT" technique and I can honestly say I feel better for it. Also I carry a water bottle everywhere....constantly taking "little sips" is what she recommends and I agree! Thanks Yvonne." - Leisa Reid Fisicaro

This is a day filled with working on key aspects to vocal fitness, performance, flexibility and care.

Content will include:

  • THE “A” AND “P” OF VOICE - your instrument and how it is designed to work
  • BACK TO BREATH - supporting the voice, handling stress
  • IS YOUR TONE TELLING ON YOU? - what happens when we strain and fatigue
  • ARTICULATORY BOOT CAMP - fitness and performance
  • KEEPING ON TOP OF THINGS - fitness, health and a good voice work out
  • THE EXTREMES - introduction to avoiding damage when taking the voice into more intense work
  • NOT JUST WHAT YOU SAY, BUT HOW  - re-connecting to text, subtext, increasing vocal flexibility, variety and top tips for giving a great “read”.

Yvonne Morley is a very experienced and brilliant vocal coach. She works with The Globe and has worked with Drama Schools including LAMDA as well as working on many West End shows. Yvonne has developed this course for voiceover artists.
Handouts will be provided. This is a practice regime to help strengthen the voice with a view to following this workshop, with a day working safely through vocal extremes. It will be exclusively for those who have completed this workshop and deemed to be suitable.

Once you have completed the Vocal Intensive workshop you can then take part in the Vocal Extreme day which is a day where you learn how to scream, laugh and cry without doing any damage to your voice. This will be on 22nd April

The Impromptu Character workshop
with Stephane Cornicard

The VoiceOver Network brings you this two day workshop focusing on the process involved in developing credible, precise and inhabited characters. Learn how to “step” into character.

  • Do you want to learn how to step into a character with confidence?
  • Are you interested in creating characters that are believable?
  • Do you want to develop the skills to move from one character to the next, learning to trust your instinct?

Photo of Stephane Cornicard running a character workshop at our GET YOUR GAME ON event in April 2016 at Red Bull Studios, London.

This “safe place” workshop aims to train the very particular set of muscles and thought processes involved in creating characters. Through improvisation and borrowing from various methods and systems, you will learn to move from character to character, from emotion to emotion and from genre to genre, giving you more confidence to approach and create “impromptu” characters, and a better control of the process.

“Insightful and Inspirational. Stephane is full of knowledge and tips.” Natalie Chisholm

This 2 day workshop will be for those wanting to stretch and explore their acting skills.

It is for voiceover artists and voice actors of all abilities. So whether you are an experienced professional or at the start of your career you are welcome on this course.

“I learnt so much and it honestly left me hungry for more! The way he can coax out that but more to get the best out of your best was astounding to witness.” Adam Dergiman

Stephane Cornicard is a consummate actor and director. He is able to help the actor produce clear concise and conceivable characters. His experience and knowledge is second to none and you have a hell of a time doing it along the way. What a generous artist.” Dianne Weller

This will be a jam packed weekend of learning and all attendees will come away from this workshop with knowledge, confidence and skills.
